Women of Esteem launch a petition for recent rape case thrown out of Court

Advocacy group Women of Esteem will be launching a petition that will ask the Cabinet of Ministers to review a case of kidnap and rape.

Last week, a police officer was set free of kidnapping and rape charges by a High Court judge, after the victim said she did not want to pursue the case.

After speaking with her counselor and parents the girl said she had forgiven her accuser and did not want to recount the incident that happened when she was only 13 years old.

Well, Founder and president of the group, Nikki Phoenix, in the absence of the girl’s confession, the want the Cabinet to do more to see this case through.

Phoenix says the group will be asking Cabinet to make the victim’s statement null and void.

She says the group is interested in seeing legislation followed through by action.

The group is planning to launch the petition on Thursday, the day which observes the International Day of the Girl Child.
